The Asthma Foundation of WA, a Registered Training Organisation, offers training opportunities for health professionals and organisations with an interest or need in the area of asthma. A range of training options are available to help manage asthma within a variety of settings. The training package is designed according to your professional requirements and is delivered at our West Perth office or at your organisation if required.

In addition to scheduled Emergency Asthma Management Courses, one day Asthma Seminars for Health Professionals, two day Asthma Management Courses and the four day Asthma Educators' Course, the Asthma Foundation of WA offers Tailored Asthma Training. Asthma Seminar for Health Professionals

The Asthma Seminar for Health Professionals is a full day seminar that aims to increase awareness of current asthma management protocols in a variety of settings. We encourage all health professionals to come along and update their skills.

The seminars are held regularly throughout the year in our West Perth office and are presented by a number of speakers including respiratory specialists, paediatricians, immunologists, nurses and asthma educators.

Asthma Educators' Course

The Asthma Foundation of WA runs Western Australia's only nationally recognised training course for health professionals wanting to enhance their knowledge of asthma and gain the skills to plan, develop and implement asthma education programs within their workplace or community.

The course provides nationally recognised outcomes leading to a partial completion of a Certificate IV in Population Health, comprising the following units of competency:

  • HLTCOM1A - Provide specific information to clients/patients
  • HLTCOM4A - Communicate effectively with clients/patients
  • CHCHPROM1A - Share health information
  • CHCCD2B - Provide community education projects
  • HLTPOP02A - Assess readiness for and effect behaviour change

(The units of competency have been clustered for the requirements of this course).

The Asthma Educators' Course consists of a workbook which is completed prior to the course, a 4 day Asthma Management Workshop including education role plays and practical assessments and a post course assessment completed in a workplace (or simulated) environment.

Asthma Management Course

The Asthma Management Course is a 2 day course that is designed to update skills and knowledge in asthma management for participants who have previously completed the Asthma Educators' Course and are due for re-registration with the Asthma Foundation of WA.

Asthma Management Courses will focus on the latest in asthma management and will be held throughout the year at our West Perth office.

Emergency Asthma Management (EAM)

The Asthma Foundation of WA runs Western Australia's only nationally accredited course in Emergency Asthma Management. The course is for anyone who is interested in expanding their knowledge base in dealing with asthma emergencies.

The EAM course is designed for people who are in a position where they hold a 'Duty of Care'. The course is suitable for childcare centre coordinators, workplaces and sporting clubs.

The Emergency Asthma Management Course covers the following topics.

  • What is asthma?
  • Differences between asthma medications.
  • First Aid, what to do and how to know when it is needed.
  • How to clean a spacer correctly.
  • Preparing an asthma policy for your workplace, school, sporting club or childcare centre.

Course participants receive a booklet containing basic facts about asthma and a sample asthma policy. A copy of the student handbook is available on request.

Tailored Asthma Training

The Asthma Foundation of WA conducts Tailored Asthma Training (TAT) for:

  1. Rural and remote areas
    The Asthma Foundation can customise a course suitable to the asthma requirements and health infrastructure of your rural or remote area. The course may comprise all or components of existing Foundation education and training, or a new course can be designed for your area if required.
  2. Organisations and workplaces
    The Asthma Foundation will design a Tailored Asthma Training session suitable to the requirements of your organisation. The session may comprise all or components of existing Foundation education and training, or a new course can be designed for your organisation if required.

Options for Tailored Asthma Training can include sessions from the Asthma Educators' Course, Emergency Asthma Management Course for childcare centres, sporting groups or workplaces - please refer to the information above for details about these training courses. Components of our 'Ask the Asthma Educator' courses for people with asthma may also be included if appropriate.
