  • Brief summary of NAPS
  • Discussion of the issue of smoking whilst pregnant and around newborns
  • Discussion of current strategies to promote the dangers of smoking whilst pregnant and around newborns
  • Discussion of the process of cigarette withdrawal, support services available, and the creation of smoke free environments
  • Presentation and distribution of the NAPS resources and discussion of how they could be used to compliment existing practice.

Training SeminarsHalf day NAPS and Brief Intervention Training

Do you feel confident asking your patients about their smoking habits? Do you wonder what you can achieve in such a short period of time? Are you concerned about the possibility of losing a client if you do ask?

NAPS in collaboration with the Cancer Council of WA’s Fresh Start Program have created a brief intervention training program tailored specifically for midwives, antenatal educators and child health nurses.

“Brief intervention consists of brief cessation advice from health care workers delivered opportunistically during routine consultations to smokers whether or not they are seeking help with stopping smoking (Miller & Wood, 2001)”.

Brief intervention training is designed to equip health professionals with the knowledge and skills to provide brief smoking cessation advice to patients. NAPS and Fresh Start have created a brief intervention training program based on the evidence based 5 A’s model. This program is for training health professionals who would like to learn the skills of brief intervention specifically adapted to intervening with new mothers that smoke or with partners that smoke. The training has been adapted to suit the needs of midwives, antenatal educators and child health nurses involved specifically with dealing with pregnant women that smoke.

This free training will provide you with the skills necessary to be able to feel comfortable providing tobacco cessation advice to your clients. The training can be organised as a half day workshop or a two hour workshop depending on the depth of the training. The training can be conducted in your area, including regional areas, so there is no need to travel.
